Readers of James Bond novels will be familiar with SMERSH, the evil Soviet Communist counter-intelligence agency. It’s not fiction: ‘SMERt' SHpionam’ (Смерть Шпионам) - coined by Stalin himself - means ‘Death to Spies.’
Now, Ukraine is operating something similar. There is a website called Myrotvorets (‘Peacemaker’) that lists Ukraine’s purported enemies. If you have a strong stomach - WARNING! grisly photos of murder victims - you can see it here.
Set up in 2014 by a former Ukraine spook, Myrotvorets claims to be an information centre linked to the CIA in Langley and officialdom in Warsaw. Its initial targets were members of the 9th Directorate of the Fifth Service of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), i.e. Russian intelligence’s section focusing on Ukraine. It says that the data are intended for use by ‘the special services of Ukraine and partner countries’, but the plan is/was to extend the list to give personal details of ‘citizens of Ukraine who are in touch with [the FSB]’, adding ‘What to do with them - you decide.’ The photos make the intention clear, and the ‘you’ could be read as encouraging self-appointed assassins.
The ‘kill list’ ballooned from 4,500 in 2014 to approaching 200,000 in 2019, including politicians and journalists, to deadly effect, e.g. Wiki cites al-Jazeera, saying the site ‘published the home addresses of Ukrainian writer Oles Buzina and former Verkhovna Rada parliamentarian Oleg Kalashnikov, just days before they were assassinated.’
Foreigners are on the list, too. The brave and independent Canadian journalist Eva Bartlett notes that she herself is one of Myrotvorets’ intended victims, and that her own government fails to condemn it.
It must surely be significant that President Zelenskyy has not shut down this murderous database, even though he could, having taken to ruling by personal decree. Seeing what Myrotvorets wishes for ‘terrorists’, we have to ask what Zelenskyy plans to happen to the two generals he called ‘traitors’ and dismissed on 31 March, saying ‘Regarding antiheroes. Now, I do not have time to deal with all the traitors. But gradually they will all be punished.'
