The German-Polish writer Henryk M Broder wrote in one of his columns for a German newspaper that his answer to the question, especially from the younger generation, about how Germany could so quickly fall into the dictatorship in the 1930s:

"Because the people then were as you are now" - wise words which apply not just to Germans ...

The use of "reactionary" as a critical epithet seems to assume that all current "progress" is good. (A reactionary being someone who thinks that, in some ways at least, the past was better).

Just think for a while about the kinds of change that are sold to us as "progressive". Net Zero, war against Russia (followed, perhaps, by China), LGBTM+++, unlimited immigration, more and more inoculations every year, dumbing down of education, use of smartphones for almost everything, police who spend so much time pouncing on wrongthink that they no longer even investigate burglaries, robbery, assault, or car accidents, ministers who lied on their CVs...

Perhaps being a reactionary is just sane. If that isn't another "outdated" concept.
