DeSantis, the Eighth Day Adventist
I didn’t understand Trump’s crack about Ron ‘DeSanctimonious’ until Russell Brand riffed on the latter’s most recent campaign ad. As the rest of the Internet is saying, it’s utterly extraordinary. I can only hope that those who voted DeSantis hadn’t seen it, or if they had, were the kind that has forgotten their trousers; there must be a fair few in Florida.
Here it is, straight. Or, with supplementary comment, here:
Apparently it’s a ‘takeoff’ of Paul Harvey's famous "So God Made a Farmer" speech to the Future Farmers of America in Kansas City in 1978. That’s no excuse: the original was generic praise for vital labour, this is near-blasphemous boosterism.
Some are tipping DeSantis as a potential Presidential candidate for 2024. If he continues with this approach he may not enjoy a Red Wave but instead a parting of the Red Sea that closes over him halfway through, multiple thunderbolts smiting his head as he sinks.
Running for State Governor, DeSantis won a shade under 60% of the vote. His Democratic opponent was a man called Crist; there, but for a typographical omission…
